I have a love-hate relationship with our district adopted math text book. I like what skills it teaches, but I hate that there just isn't enough practice. I feel like I am always searching for or making extra curriculum to go along with the skill. I've used it for Grades K, 1, 2 and 3 and it is the same for each grade level. Tally marks is one of the skills we are to teach in kindergarten, but again I find it very limited on resources. Trying to explain tally marks to five year old- well it was interesting. One little one said "why do we need to count with sticks?" My inner mother wanted to say " because I said so..." This week is our last week before spring break so I'm trying to make it a little fun being that they all have spring fever, even though it is pouring right now. So, here is a little St. Patrick's Day Tally Mark Freebie just for you. I'd love to know how you go abut teaching tally marks. Come by my blog, grab my freebie and share with me what you do.
