My students are primarily English Language Learners. As such, it is very important for them to hear language being spoken, and have a chance to speak it themselves. Because of this, one of the highlights of the day for years has been our Poem of the Week. Taking a week to learn a poem, as well as talk about the various poetic devices and traits within the poem, my students would recite and practice each piece. They would practice rhyme scheme, discuss author's purpose, and other poetic qualities within the poem. My students looked forward to this time of day from the second they walked into the classroom.
Come visit me at Teaching in Room 6 to see how I lay out this time of day. Be sure to pick up the free recording sheet that you can give to the students. See you there!
