More than anything else on my blog, I am asked about how I implement Calendar Math. I think the idea that I do it in the upper elementary grades is a bit different for some people. What many people say is "I used to teach primary and did this all the time. I NEVER thought to do it in the upper grades!" and then follows the onslaught of questions.
So I thought I would put together a post of all the most commonly asked questions that I am usually emailing to people ;) Come on over to my blog and read how I find the numbers, what I do about COPIES, and how I review the Calendar with my students.
You will want to begin here. Read all about the basic idea behind Calendar and pick up your free recording sheet (for both 4th and 5th grade).
You can read a bit further about how I implement it in the first week and then pick up a set out procedure routine for you to customize to your own classroom as well.
Then, watch this video I created to show you the hand motions. Finally, you can see it all in pictures here.
OK...so hopefully you now have some food for thought about implementing Calendar Math in your upper grade classroom. Start at the FAQs and go from there! And if you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to ask!
