Guided Reading with Emergent Readers?

Emergent readers just aren't yet capable of processing text. They don't quite have the phonemic awareness that's needed. Can emergent readers participate in guided reading groups? Yes!

Chapter 3 in Guiding Readers: Making the Most of the 18-Minute Guided Reading Lesson is all about working with emergent readers in small group.

The guided reading session just looks a little different for this group of kiddos. Guided reading can support emergent readers in becoming successful and independent. Here are some things to keep in mind:
  • Carefully choose texts for emergent readers. Look for repetitive, predictive text with large font.
  • Shared reading should begin the session with the book.
  • Make sure every child knows what is on each page before you allow them to work independently with the text.
  • Use additional activities during the session that include letter naming, letter or word searches, phoneme segmentation, in addition to lots of other ideas Rog has in Chapter 3.
