Chapter 3 in Guiding Readers: Making the Most of the 18-Minute Guided Reading Lesson is all about working with emergent readers in small group.
The guided reading session just looks a little different for this group of kiddos. Guided reading can support emergent readers in becoming successful and independent. Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Carefully choose texts for emergent readers. Look for repetitive, predictive text with large font.
- Shared reading should begin the session with the book.
- Make sure every child knows what is on each page before you allow them to work independently with the text.
- Use additional activities during the session that include letter naming, letter or word searches, phoneme segmentation, in addition to lots of other ideas Rog has in Chapter 3.
