Introducing Picture Book Lessons with a Back-to-School Name Tag Craftivity

From me, the creator of Sub Hub, comes a new blog all about teaching across the curriculum with picture books — Picture Book Lessons. Teaching with picture books is a classroom passion of mine, and I am finding many other teachers share a similar passion.

Plenty of teachers use picture books as a read-aloud for back-to-school, and I wanted to give an idea to do just that. But of course, I had to be a little different, so my craftivity is based on A House for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle. You might not think the book has much to do with back-to-school, but comparisons can be made between outgrowing the shell and outgrowing last year's classroom.

And just like hermit crab decorates his new shell to make it feel like home, students can use my free pattern to create A Desk for Hermit Students Name Tag and decorate their desk with an all-about-me desk name tag.
